Die Textformen des Sirachbuches und ihre Zielgruppen. In: Protokolle zur Bibel 6,2 (1997), 87–112.

Unterscheidung und Charakterisierung der Textformen des Sirachbuches (Sir Hebr I–III, Sir Gr I–II, Sir Syr, Vetus Latina, Vulgata) und der Leserschichten, für die sie jeweils geschaffen wurden – die Grundlage der Sigla-Tabelle dieser Seite.

English abstract: The article distinguishes and characterizes the text forms of the Book of Sirach – the primary Hebrew text form (Sir Hebr I), the expanded Hebrew forms (Sir Hebr II and III), the two Greek recensions (Sir Gr I and II), the Syriac translation with its revised form (Peshitta) and the syro-hexaplaric version, as well as the Vetus Latina and the Vulgate – and the readerships for which each was created: Hebrew forms for Jewish circles in Palestine, the Greek translation for the Jewish diaspora in Egypt, the expanded and revised forms for later Jewish and Christian communities, and the Latin versions for the Western church. The plurality of text forms thus reflects intentional, audience-oriented editorial work rather than mere manuscript corruption, connecting textual history with the reception history of the book. It is the foundation of the sigla table of this page.

In: SNTU.A 22 (1997), 160–180.

English abstract: A theological interpretation of the expanded text forms (Sir II): the promise of the book of life (liber vitae) is the driving motif and theological leitmotif of the additions that distinguish the expanded forms (Sir Hebr II, Sir Gr II and their descendants, including parts of the Vetus Latina). The additions are read not as random growth but as a theologically motivated process that opens an eschatological horizon for a wisdom book originally framed by the limits of earthly life. The study assesses the research history from Schlatter to Wright and Gilbert, who describe the expanded text as multiform and its growth as a long, never systematized process, and takes up Segal's suggestion of assigning the additions to different epochs.

Ein Liebesgedicht eines jüdischen Weisheitslehrers auf seine Jugendliebe (Sir 51,13–30). In: Biblisches Forum 1/2000.

Vgl. Kommentar zu Sir 51.

English abstract: An exegetical study of the alphabetical acrostic poem at the end of the book (Sir 51:13–30), building on Skehan's reconstruction of the Hebrew text (the Qumran psalter fragment 11QPsa for the first half, Ms. B corrected by the Syriac and Greek for the second). The poem is interwoven with the whole book through a dense chain of keywords: its 22+1 lines correspond structurally to the 22 verses of the instruction on wisdom's school in Sir 6:18–37, and further lines run to Sir 14:20–15:10. The aging teacher looks back on his youth and describes the acquisition of wisdom as a lifelong process of seeking. The study traces the idealized woman Wisdom as the poem's beloved, the understanding of the allegory in the ancient translations, the closing appeals to youth in Sirach and Qohelet, and the later relecture of the poem as a Solomonic autobiography, which in the Vetus Latina generated the additional chapter Sir 52. Conclusion: Sir 51:13–30 is a constitutive building block and the programmatic climax of the book. Cf. the commentary on Sir 51.

English abstract: A text-critical study demonstrating that in the Greek tradition of Sirach the twelfth and thirteenth gatherings (quires) of the ancestral codex were transmitted in transposed order. The misplaced sequence of leaves explains the well-known disorder in the middle of the Greek Sirach: the chapters Sir 30–33 have come down to us in a sequence that does not reflect the original arrangement of the Hebrew text. Reconstructing the original quire order restores the plausible sequence of Sir 30–33 and resolves long-standing puzzles of coherence in this section. The finding illustrates how the physical features of the ancient codex directly control the textual history, and warns against emending passages whose disorder is purely mechanical in origin. Applied in the commentary pages on Sir 30 to Sir 33.

Spiegelungen der Seele und Gesichter – Traumkritik im Sirachbuch. In: Geistes-Gegenwart.

Vgl. Kommentar zu Sir 34.

English abstract: A study of Ben Sira's critical engagement with dreams and dream interpretation, above all in Sir 34:1–8, against the double background of the Ancient Near East, where dream interpretation was an established religious practice, and the Hellenistic world, in which dream diagnosis and dream divination flourished. Dreams are reflections of the soul that mirror the dreamer's own concerns rather than divine messages – a psychological insight avant la lettre – and the many faces of dreams correspond to the many idle hopes of those who pursue them. Unlike divination, magic and omens, which he rejects in the same context, reliable knowledge of God's will comes from the Torah and from wisdom, not from nocturnal visions: Ben Sira as an early witness of a rationalizing, interiorizing interpretation of dreams within a wisdom-theological framework. Cf. the commentary on Sir 34.

English abstract: Against the older debate about whether the Syriac Sirach (Sir Syr) derives from a first, allegedly ebionitic translation later reworked by orthodox Christians, this study argues that the composition of the Syriac book reached its present form through several identifiable steps – and that its Hebrew Vorlage was a third, independently revised Hebrew text form (Segal's Sir Hebr III), still visible in Ms. A of the Cairo Geniza and above all in the rhymed Hebrew paraphrase of Ben Sira from the Ben-Ezra Geniza. Key observations include the systematic person shifts in Sir 1, 4 and 51; the exclusion of Ms. B as a retroversion from the Syriac in Sir 51:1–12; a deliberate Syriac wordplay on the book of sins in SirSyr 9:7; and the programmatic conclusion Sir 50:27–30 bracketing the book with Sir 1:20a–z. The rhymed Geniza paraphrase is the closest surviving witness to the Vorlage of the Syriac translation.

Handschriftenforschung mit Computer und Smartphone – Digitalisate zu Tobit und Sirach. (2020)

English abstract: A methodological article on how the digitization of manuscripts and fragments – material long inaccessible outside reading rooms – has transformed work on the textual history of biblical books, demonstrated concretely for Tobit and the Sirach fragments (Geniza manuscripts, Qumran fragments, Greek papyri). Digital manuscript collections, online facsimiles, transcription tools and simple computer programs allow collation, comparison and evaluation of fragmentary witnesses at one's own desk and even via smartphone; QR codes link the printed text to continuously updated digital resource lists. For the Sirach fragments the article describes the practical workflow: identifying and retrieving digital facsimiles, transcribing them with computer support, and integrating the results into text-critical analysis. The decisive research instruments of manuscript philology are no longer the library ticket but bandwidth, image resolution and search interfaces.

The Book of Sirach in The Armenian Biblical Tradition: Yakob Nalean and His Commentary on Sirach http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/7054/ The extreme complexity of Sirach?s text at times makes it almost impossible to come to one clear conclusion as regards certain issues. There are numerous differences between various translations of this deuterocanonical text. In addition, the Armenian translation, being a textual witness to not one but multiple parent texts, has its own complications. This research provides a sustained theological reading of the Armenian text of Sirach on the basis of Yakob Nalean?s commentary written in the 18t []
